Three years ago, Kamenický Šenov became for the first time the site of the International Symposium of Engraved Glass, organized at the occasion of the 140th annivesary of the Secondary Glass School of Applied Arts Kamenický Šenov. This year´s 2nd Symposium, held under the protection of the Czech UNESCO committee, was dedicated to the 200th anniversary of an engraver, designer and businessman Dominik Biemann. The aim of the Symposium was to awaken impulses for a new creation in the engraved glass, an effort to get for the idea the best experts from the whole world, as well as to revive the old and to create new work and personal contacts. In this year´s Symposium took part 142 engravers, designers, historians, collectors and gallery people from 11 countries (CZ, BRD, A, USA, RUS, GB, NL, PL, H, JAP, EST), 77 of them were designers and engravers.
The permanently growing interest in the engraved glass was confirmed by the massive participation of glass experts, artists and craftsmen, as well as by the high standard of exhibits, displayed at the Glassicenter from 18.9.-31.10. Compared with the gallery like character of the exhibition during the 1st Symposium, the current representative collection of many authors offers a more complete overview of the contemporary engraved glass in the world.
The Symposium, full of the creative and very friendly atmosphere, contributed to a mutual dialogue and understanding. There were many enthusiastic discussions here, many new friendships were established ...An excellent work of the organizational team ensured a pleasant course of the complete Symposium with fully satisfied participants. We do believe that many of them will come back in 2002, which will be in Kamenický Šenov dedicated the 650th anniversary of the town, to support the development of the engraved glass of both present and future, on the breeding ground of a rich historical tradition.
